Go wild in the countryside during Wildlife Week
PEOPLE all over Scotland are being invited to go wild in the countryside in June - choosing from over 230 events and activities which make up Wildlife Week 2009.
Co-ordinated by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, there's everything from pond dipping, counting butterflies, spotting peregrines, watching badgers by moonlight and identifying rare plants.
Simon Milne, chief executive of the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT), said: "Now in its eighth year, Scotland's national Wildlife Week aims to encourage people to explore their local parks, woodlands and seashores and perhaps even venture into the hills or take a boat trip – it's all about discovering and enjoying the wonderful natural landscapes and native wildlife of Scotland."
In the Borders, people can take a botanical walk along Coldingham Beach, a guided walk through the Torwoodlee Estate or an evening walk through woodlands around Spottiswoode House.
Wildlife Week is also a perfect time to join SWT - anyone who picks up a brochure will get a voucher to join for only half price and there are free tickets to the SWT visitor centres and child free tickets to the National Trust for Scotland properties at Brodick Castle and Glencoe Visitor Centre.
The Wildlife Week programme has something of interest for everyone, whatever their age, interests and abilities. Many activities are free. Some are aimed at families, some are for adults only. Some are early morning, listening to the dawn chorus, others run late into the night, looking for bats and badgers. People can learn new skills like wildlife planting or photography or can simply enjoy the wonder of the natural world around them.
