Mizen Head fish dishes perfect for warming up
REVIEW: THE MIZEN HEAD HOTEL, BAMBURGH
BAMBURGH is an idyllic country village and the ancient seat of the kings of Northumbria. It is set in one of the most breathtaking picturesque coastal regions of our county.
Its enormous beaches go on for miles and its tranquil and rural setting is an appealing base for visitors to explore Northumberland.
It was a cold, wet, dreary day with even some hailstones falling when we met a group of authors from the city who regularly come north to Bamburgh to enjoy an excellent hotel, good food and literary chat.
They chose to come to Bamburgh because of its sheer beauty and also it was easy to reach being just off the track of the busy A1.
We had heard many good reports about the Mizen Head Hotel, north of the village, so when we saw a notice that they were serving food all day we parked our car and headed inside.
It was wet and very cold, so we were not surprised to see diners enjoying their food in a warm and cosy atmosphere.
For anyone who likes fish dishes this hotel is a must. A family on the next table was enjoying a six pound lobster between them, whilst another family were enjoying roast monkfish wrapped in pancetta with creamed leeks and chive oil.
I also noticed there were a wide variety of mussel dishes on the menu and the food looked truly delicious.
There was a variety of interesting starters on the menu, all reasonably priced, but we preferred to use the grill menu and chose the chargrilled fillet of chicken served with diane sauce which tasted delicious. The service was professional and friendly and we did not have long to wait for our meal.
Although the dessert menu was tempting we chose a latte coffee with a chocolate biscuit to round off our meal. The waiter had a good knowledge of all the food served and explained that the chef always used Northumberland produce whenever possible.
It is a pity we did not know more about The Mizen Head earlier as we would have certainly dined at the hotel more often.
The visit to Bamburgh and the Mizen Head Hotel was so memorable and our author colleagues enjoyed their weekend so much that they are already planning another visit.
