Giacopazzi’s ice cream voted Britain’s best

THE uncle and nephew who run Giacopazzi’s ice cream shop in Eyemouth are celebrating after being declared Champion of Champions at the Ice Cream Allliance’s National Competition.

Peter Giacopazzi and his nephew, Somers, received the ultimate accolade in the ice cream world for their chocolate fudge brownie flavour.

After winning the Open Flavour Class, a fourth gold medal in ten years, Giacopazzi’s recipe scooped the top award when it was declared Champion of Champions for flavoured ice cream.

The winning ice cream was created specially for the competition, which saw the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate, host hundreds of entries, of every flavour.

Now, Somers and Peter are preparing to offer it in their harbourside shop, after interest was piqued following the award.

It took six months of tinkering, allying traditional Italian techniques with a modern twist, with Peter’s original idea until the ice cream was considered for competition.

“It was great to be meeting up with old friends and pick up some new ideas at the awards,” said Somers.

“It is quite competitive, but people there like Filipo Mancini, he is very much down to earth, a real character.

“It was good as well, this year, because it wasn’t just the big businesses who won all the awards. There was a good mix of people winning.”

For now, the pair are enjoying their success and hoping that the spring sunshine on Eyemouth harbour prompts plenty of visitors to try a cone or two.

“We’re not sure where we’ll be competing next,” said Somers. “The Highland Show runs an ice cream competition, and we’ve entered the Great Taste before and done well, winning three stars in 2009, so it might be those.

“But before any of that, we’re in charge of the ice cream at the Alliance’s Black and White Ball, which is this Friday.”

Zelica Carr, chief executive officer of the Ice Cream Alliance, said Giacopazzi’s ice cream was outstanding: “They have beaten very strong competition with this superb ice cream and thoroughly deserved the Champion of Champions award,” she said.

Jim Hume, Scottish Liberal Democrat Borders MSP, also congratulated Giacopazzi’s on their win. He said: “They have done extremely well. Giacopazzi’s is an excellent example of a local business striving to offer the best quality of product to customers, it’s businesses like this which keep our high streets vibrant.”
