Food with a view – Maltings Kitchen has recipe for success
REVIEW: THE MALTINGS KITCHEN
We had a difficult week with a freezing cold house due to a broken combi boiler so we were glad to go out and enjoy a meal at The Maltings Kitchen where it is cosy and warm and the food is reputed to be very good.
Situated in the centre of Berwick within The Maltings complex, The Maltings Kitchen has magnificent views over the old 17th century bridge and the River Tweed estuary. We were met by efficient and welcoming staff and were pleased to be given a table near the window where we enjoyed great views over the old town and the rooftops.
We did not wait long to be served and I chose the local homemade fish cakes with a mixed salad and a small appetising beetroot salad, served with the most delicious mayonnaise dressing. Edward chose a steak salad which is always his favourite and our little granddaughter enjoyed a small bowl of soup. She wasn’t too interested in food as she was fascinated by the view from the large window, imagining she was Mary Poppins flying over the chimney tops of the old walled town.
We had heard a lot about the wonderful desserts, especially the white chocolate and the raspberry cake, but we decided we had already eaten enough.
Instead we opted for tea and were given two individual teapots brimming with delicious tea served by a friendly waitress.
The Maltings Kitchen is a great place to go for a substantial lunch, morning coffee and cake, or afternoon tea served with delicious cakes and home-made scones. It is also ideal for a pre-theatre meal and makes a special evening, with a beautiful view over the river and an excellent show.
If it is a special occasion it is always best to book a table as it is a popular place.
As we left the theatre, there were lots of people gathered in the foyer booking for the ‘Emergency Services Pantomime’. We also noticed some local books on sale and purchased one for our granddaughter.
There is always something to interest all ages at The Maltings and it is a delightful place to visit. We were reluctant to return to our cold house which had now been without heating for 10 days.
Hurrah, there was a message on the answerphone saying they were coming out to fix it on Monday. We will wait and see!
