Westruther farmer Tom Walker was at the forefront of back-end technology in 1990 when his invention changed how he lived during calving.

Tired of getting up during the night to check on his pregnant cows, Tom rigged up a device based on a burglar alarm that would wake him when one started dilating. Tom applied for a patent for the device, seen above in situ in an improvised harness.

He was presented with an award at the 1989-90 Rural Inventions Competition at that year’s Highland Show.
