Berwickshire men go to war

This was the scene at Duns Station in September 1914 when a group of over 30 Duns men left for the war in Europe.

In the same issue, a large recruiting meeting was described as being held at Ednam, attended by General Babbington, who proclaimed in his speech: “In the excitement of fighting the average British soldier did not think of danger.”

He went on to say that he was sure that recruits from the area would “heartily respond to Lord Kitchener’s call, and uphold the reputation of the Borderland in terms of loyalty to King and Country”.
