SCOTTISH Borders Council’s plan to modernise Borders schools by bidding for Public Private Partnership funding has had a mixed response in Berwickshire because although the district would gain new modern schools the price to pay would be the likely closure of up to six local schools.

THREE Berwickshire businesses will share in the £3.2 million of grant funding for fisheries and aquaculture.

DUNS has lost its battle to keep the Jim Clark Memorial Rally in the town. The organisers of the event have confirmed that it will start and finish in Kelso.

TREACHEROUS weather conditions on the north side of the Cheviots claimed the lives of two climbers when they were struck by an avalanche at the weekend. A third person with them managed to escape and went for help.

50 years ago

BERWICKSHIRE is once again in the grip of snow. The six weeks period of Arctic weather is one of the worst in living memory - 1947 being the last really bad winter.

FOR three days supporters of Duns Football Club carried snow off the pitch at Hawthorn Park but their efforts were in vain - the Duns versus Gala Fairydean second round Scottish Cup tie had to be postponed owing to the pitch being unfit.

100 years ago

THE poor illuminating qualities of the gas at present being supplied to Duns caused Bailie More to call for the town to make an earnest attempt to get electric lighting.

THE East of Scotland Consolation Cup first round match between Coldstream and Leith Amateurs was played in Home Park - a 2-0 win for Coldstream. The club has a hard nut to crack in Gala Fairydean in the next round.
