Berwick Rangers’ hopes of cup glory were dashed by the most outrageous piece of unsportsmanlike behaviour against Montrose.

With Steve Kerrigan injured just inside Rangers’ half, Berwick ‘keeper Ross Godfrey rolled the ball towards the sideline so his teammate could receive treatment,only for Montrose winger Kevin Webster to intercept and chip into the exposed away goal for what proved a controversial winning goal.

The 300-year-old marble and alabaster monument to George Home, Earl of Dunbar, severely damaged during the fire that devastated Dunbar Parish Church in January, was inspected by Professor Ottorino Nonformale who made a special visit from Bologna, Italy.

The Professor considers that despite extensive damage caused by smoke and by the combination of intense heat and cold water the monument can be restored.

50 years ago

Local farmers have taken the top two places in the Scottish Regional competition for malting barley.

The best barley was flown from A. H. and G. A Young of Tower Farm, Cockburnspath. Second place went to J R B Wilson and Sons, of Yetholm.

The Employment Bill was lacking in many essentials as far as depopulated areas were concerned, according to Provost M McCallum, speaking at Duns Town Council.

100 years ago

At a meeting of the followers of the Buccleuch Hunt, it was announced that the Duke of Buccleuch had intimated his intention to continue to hunt the country as present, provided a subscription of £2000 was guaranteed.

Mr Athole Hay met with a painful accident on the curling pond at Sunlaws. Preparing for a match, Mr Hay slipped and fell, fracturing his collarbone. He proceeded by motorcar to Marlefield, where he was surgically attended.
