THE two Green Goddess fire engines destined for Eyemouth to cover Berwickshire during the firefighters strike have been deployed elsewhere after the local retained crews signalled their intention to remain on call during the eight day strike.

A HIGH powered Soviet delegation visitied Paxton South Mains Farm, of Mr John Home robertson. Aleksander Vasilyevick Aleksankin, the USSR’s First Deputy Minister of Land Reclamation was among the delegation who watched equipment being operated by local contractor Johnny Rutherford.

ALTHOUGH he stressed that there were many initial difficulties to overcome, the president of the National Farmers Union of Scotland told the Mid and East Berwickshire farmers that the Common Market would eventually be a success.

TWO petitions were presented regarding the proposal to take one of the roads to Polwarth off the list of highways. The road will remain on the list for now.

100 years ago

A DESTRUCTIVE fire occurred on the large farm of Fairnieside, near Burnmouth on Sunday morning. The brigades from Ayton Castle and Berwick were summoned, the news reaching Berwick by telephone. By the time they arrived the fire had been raging for two hours.

ALL the Burnmouth boats engaged in the English herring fishing at Yarmouth returned home last Friday, after a profitable ten weeks.
