THE future for Berwickshire’s fishing communities is looking increasingly bleak, and the fight is on for survival of the industry which could see the loss of 1000 jobs in Eyemouth alone.

A FISHWICK farmer’s plans to turn his 400 acre farm into a tourist attraction hit a stumbling block this week when councillors refused him planning permission to build four new houses. Future plans include a riding school and camp site to supplement his mixed cereal, beef and sheep farm.

THE vast majority of Berwickshire people want to see the new ambulance station sited at Chirnside, it was claimed by Councillor Michaelle Burns Grieg.

BERWICKSHIRE farmers’ annual ball was held in the Drill Hall, Duns, on Friday evening when there was an attendance of about 180 people.

THE old air raid shelter in Duns Public Park is to be converted into a pavilion.

IN Duns a large number of people turned out for the Remembrance Service which was held at the war memorial in the public park. A parade led by the Pipe Band of the 4/5 KOSB marched through the town to the public park.

100 years ago

MANDERSTON , the palatial country residence of the Hon. Lady Miller, near Duns, has been en fete this past week. In honour of her nieces, Miss Magdalen and Miss Rosamond Curzon, her ladyship arranged a fancy dress ball, to which there were invited close upon 400 ladies and gentlemen, comprising the aristocracy of Berwickshire and the adjoining counties.

A MOTOR service is to be started between St Abbs, Coldingham, Reston and Cockburnspath.
