t SIX Berwickshire men cheated death last week when they were rescued from their sinking boat. The Ariga III started taking in water 40 miles east of the River Tyne on Thursday evening. The Tynemouth lifeboat was launched and two helicopters were sent to evacuate the crew after the coastguard received a distress call at 5pm. The men from Eyemouth and St Abbs were airlifted to safety by RAF Boulmer before the vessel sunk at 6.45pm. A tragedy was avoided thanks to the quick response of the rescue services.

t A NUMBER of safety measures are to be carried out on the stretch of the A1 road at Cockburnspath in Berwickshire which has now become widely regarded as “a death trap.” This will be seen as a victory for local residents who, along with Cockburnspath Community Council, Berwickshire District Council and MP Archy Kirkwood, have been pressing for an extension of the double white lines along the centre of the village. The news was revealed this week in a letter to Mr Kirkwood by the Scottish Environment Minister, Lord Douglas Hamilton.

t ON Monday night while a little boy, of two and a half years, son of Edward McArthur, Waterloo Place, Chirnside, was playing, he suddenly emerged from behind the county council road engine and was knocked over by a passing van with the wheel going over his leg. As soon as the driver realised what had happened he attended to the boy immediately. Dr Andrew McVie was quickly sent for and had the limb put right as far as was possible. ‘The Berwickshire’ understands that the limb is not fractured but it is severely injured.
