AN innovation of short standing is the practice of trawling for herring, the ordinary and approved method of conducting the herring fishery being by drift nets, used both by the steam and sail drifters. As a result of a chance fishing the steam trawlers have in the late autumn of the past two or three years made heavy hauls of fish, which practice adherents of the older method deprecate as being destructive to vast quantities of small herrings. In view of the immense value of the herring harvest a mass meeting of protest against trawling was held.
