MEMORIES of the severe floods that hit Berwickshire in 1948 were brought flooding back this week when 80mm of rain fell in the county in a 24 hour period. All rivers in the district burst their banks, a severe flood warning was issued for the River Eye and homes and businesses flooded.

THE army is gearing up to guard over Berwickshire with antiquated ‘Green Goddess’ engines when firefighters strike next week. Four temporary fire stations have been established in the Borders.

THE Royal Observer Corps has been carrying out a recruitment drive in the Borders for members who will be ready to supply essential data should a nuclear strike hit the country.

MORE houses were required at Reston and Greenlaw and it was agreed at a meeting of the Landward Committee that application should be made to the Scottish Home Department for permission to build houses in these places.

The Earl of Home, the Foreign Secretary and owner of the extensive Hirsel estate, Coldstream has been appointed a Knight of the Order of the Thistle by Her Majesty the Queen. He was installed in a ceremony at St Giles Cathedral.

100 years ago

AN innovation of short standing is the practice of trawling for herring, the ordinary and approved method of conducting the herring fishery being by drift nets, used both by the steam and sail drifters. As a result of a chance fishing the steam trawlers have in the late autumn of the past two or three years made heavy hauls of fish, which practice adherents of the older method deprecate as being destructive to vast quantities of small herrings. In view of the immense value of the herring harvest a mass meeting of protest against trawling was held.
