Boost for RDA funds
SIR, - I write on behalf of Berwickshire Group RDA to thank everyone who attended our Bingo Night on Friday, November 9, in Reston Village Hall
The night was a great success and raised £646 for Group funds. A huge thank you to everyone who provided bingo and raffle prizes and helped on the night.
The Group stall at the BAVS Charities Market on November 24 was also successful raising £214 for the Group and the Reston Christmas Fair on Saturday, December 1, rasied £41.35. The Group is now winding down for Christmas wth our Three Nativity Plays on Monday, December 10 (1.30pm), Wednesday 12 (10am) and Tuesday 18 (7pm). All are welcome.
Friends of Victoria Lodge say thank you
SIR, -On behalf of Friends of Victoria Lodge, I would like to sincerely thank all who came along to support us at our fundraising Christmas Dinner Dance which was held in Coldstream Community Centre. I would also like to thank the many kind and generous people who contributed donations and raffle prizes. There are far too many people to name individually, but special thanks are due to Joy Thomson and Marigold Bewicke for the wonderful dinner and to Swing Street Jazz for the enjoyable and entertaining music. Two and a half years ago, relatives of the residents of Victoria Lodge were called to an official meeting to be informed of the imminent closure of the care home. A group of concerned relatives quickly formed and worked very hard to raise the profile of Victoria Lodge and which resulted in the home being purchased and saved from closure. In addition, it meant the avoidance of another empty building in the town and the saving of some 15 jobs. The same group turned itself into Friends of Victoria Lodge, which is going from strength to strength, and which now provides on-going support to the residents, staff and management of Victoria Lodge. The support offered is not only financial – a dedicated number of volunteers visit Victoria Lodge each week and help with the provision of activities and stimulation, from knitting to singing, and from hand and nail beauty treatment to reminiscing about childhood and war time memories. Although small in number at the dinner dance on Saturday night, the support in Coldstream and beyond for Victoria Lodge and its Friends is clear – the evening raised just over £1,500 and we are truly grateful to all who helped and who continue to help and support us.
On behalf of Friends of Victoria Lodge.

Macmillan Concert raises over £1,000
SIR, - The Duns Committee of Macmillan Cancer Support would like to take this opportunity to thank all who attending our Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 2, in Duns Parish Church.
The evening was a huge success as usual thanks to the pupils and staff of Berwickshire High School, Duns Primary School, Duns Guides and Swinton Brass Monkeys Brass Group.
It would be totally unfair to single out any particular performance as they were all excellent. This concert does not just happen without a huge amount of effort from the pupils and staff. The wealth of musical expertise was exceptional. Once again thank you all very much.
The refreshments for the evening were very kindly donated by Ahlstrom Chirnside Ltd. The amount raised was just over £1,000 on the night which will be utilised for various activities at the Borders General Hospital including the Margaret Kerr Pallative Care Unit which was handed over to the hospital last month.
Anyone wishing to join Macmillan Cancer Support committee should contact myself or any committee member.
Duns FC membership
SIR, - Duns residents have had a delivery of Duns Football Club membership enrolment forms.
This is a funding initiative for the development of the club who have ambitious plans in place for their premises at the old high school.
The centre will provide an excellent training and playing facility for both players and the hard working and dedicated coaching staff. Duns FC have five teams, one in particular, the under-17 junior side has had a very good run in the Scottish Cup, and Berwickshire Sports Council has recognised the work of senior team coach Neil Oliver. There are talented youngsters in our midst and with financial aid from the community they could become the football stars of tomorrow. Please help Duns FC by enrolling as members. To the residents who have registered, Duns FC is very grateful for your support.
SIR, - Now that even Mr Walthew, in his latest letter, is distancing himself from the Scottish Nationalist Party, surely it is time to rid ourselves of this modern-day dictatorship and its bullyboy tactics of riding roughshod over the decisions of locally elected councillors in order to further desecrate our beautiful countryside with yet more wind-turbines. Sadly, it is too late to save the Lammermuirs, too late to save Coldingham Moor, and probably too late to save the rest of the Eastern Borders landscape for the benefit and enjoyment of all. Future generations will find it hard to understand why we allowed it to happen.
Thanks to angling club
SIR, - On behalf of the Brain Tumour Research Fund at Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, I would like to thank Eye Water Angling Club for their generous donation of £758.65, which they raised on their Charity Fishing Day. It is very much appreciated.
