Thought for the week

THE week is the beginning of Advent, the four- week period before Christmas.

Advent means ‘coming’ and points towards the birth of Jesus. For Christians this is an exciting and special time but sadly for many in our society today these weeks are overshadowed by the trappings of modern life, the rushing about, the ‘must have’ gifts, overspending, and over-indulgence of food and drink. To enable us all to enjoy the Christmas season perhaps we should commit ourselves to shaping up, improving our fitness, not just in physical activity – though that would be an added advantage – but in fit and healthy attitudes in the four weeks ahead.

Be aware of your surroundings. Offer some help to those who need support. It is good to give! Don’t let your expectations exceed what you know is realistic. That way you will not be disappointed!

As you anticipate the busy weeks ahead, pace yourself, stay calm, light a candle, give yourself some space and perhaps reflect on the greatest arrival of all, a babe born in a stable in Bethlehem.

Find time to listen to your loved ones. Their thoughts and opinions need to be valued too.

Be thankful for the good things around, for music, laughter, the beauty of nature. This is a time for happiness and joy, not a time to yearn for material possessions. Finally have faith, be inspired seek truth and have a peaceful Advent season.
